Introduction to Breast Cancer Reconstruction

A diagnosis of breast cancer is a difficult time, and many are frightened and confused about their treatment options. We encourage patients to ask questions and become well-informed regarding their treatment and reconstructive options.

Fortunately, newer reconstructive techniques are allowing plastic surgeons to create more natural-feeling and aesthetically pleasing breasts. There are a number of reconstructive options available to patients, and Dr. Haque is pleased to offer reconstructive options to patients who are battling cancer, as well as those who have had positive genetic testing.

Dr Haque will help guide you through the process one step at a time. He will explain all the options to you and listen to your particular wishes to create a personalized approach to your reconstruction.,

What is Breast Cancer Reconstruction?

Breast cancer reconstruction is a surgical procedure that restores the shape, appearance, and symmetry of the breasts following mastectomy or lumpectomy. Reconstruction can be performed using your own natural tissue (autologous reconstruction), implants, or a combination of both. The approach depends on your health, anatomy, cancer treatment plan, and personal preferences.

Reconstruction may take place at the same time as mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or at a later time (delayed reconstruction). Both approaches have unique advantages, and Dr. Haque will discuss which option best supports your overall treatment and recovery. Importantly, studies show that breast reconstruction does not interfere with cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation, making it a safe part of your comprehensive care plan.

The Facts About Breast Reconstruction

Studies to date show that breast reconstruction does not interfere with prescribed cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Breast reconstruction has a documented psychological advantage in healing

Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after mastectomy or can be delayed, depending on the needs of the patient

Patients needing radiation treatment have a better aesthetic result if reconstruction is performed in a prior to radiation

Insurances are required by law to cover procedures to restore symmetry to your other breast

Who Are the Best Candidates For Breast Cancer Reconstruction?

The best candidates in Charlotte for breast reconstruction are women who have undergone or will undergo mastectomy or lumpectomy and want to restore their breast contour. You should be in overall good health and cleared by your cancer care team for surgery. Women who are non-smokers typically have fewer complications and smoother recovery outcomes.

Reconstruction may not be right for every patient at every stage, because some women choose to wait until after other cancer treatments are complete, while others prefer immediate reconstruction during their mastectomy.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Cancer Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction can have life-changing benefits for patients who have undergone breast cancer treatment. Physically, it restores the shape and balance of the breasts, allowing clothing to fit more comfortably and naturally. Psychologically, reconstruction often provides a sense of closure and helps women move forward with greater confidence after the challenges of cancer treatment.

Beyond restoring appearance, many women find the procedure helps them feel “whole” again, easing the daily reminder of surgery. With today’s advanced techniques, reconstruction also produces more natural-feeling results, giving patients reassurance in both private and social settings. The ultimate benefit is the freedom to feel more like yourself again.

What’s the First Step?

This collaborative discussion ensures that your reconstruction plan aligns with your overall care and your vision for recovery.

How Do I Prepare for my Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

Dr. Haque and the Queen City Plastic Surgery team are experienced in coordinating with your medical providers. We will work with your general surgeon, medical oncologist, and/or your radiation oncologist to ensure your safety during the process. Preoperative blood work is generally required before surgery, and we will ensure you’re healthy and able to undergo it.

Smoking can result in significant complications, including wound healing problems due to the decrease in circulation to the skin. As a result, we ask all patients undergoing breast reconstruction surgery to quit smoking prior to and after surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Cancer Reconstruction Surgery

On the day of your surgery in Charlotte, you’ll be placed under anesthesia to ensure comfort. The exact procedure depends on your chosen reconstruction method. For implant-based reconstruction, a tissue expander may first be placed to gradually prepare the area for an implant, or in some cases, the implant may be placed immediately. For tissue-based reconstruction, skin, fat, and sometimes muscle are taken from another area of the body (such as the abdomen or back) to form a natural breast shape.

Breast reconstruction can take several hours, depending on complexity, and in some cases may be performed in stages. After surgery, you’ll be monitored closely and given detailed aftercare instructions. Most patients return home the same day, though some may require a short hospital stay depending on the procedure.

Your Guide to Post-Breast Reconstruction Care

Most reconstructive surgery of the breast involves the use of postoperative drains for a short time after surgery. The majority of patients are not hospitalized and go home the same day as their surgery. Patients are encouraged to ambulate early during the recovery period.

How Much Does Breast Cancer Reconstruction Cost in Charlotte, NC?

The cost of Breast Cancer Reconstruction in Charlotte depends on the type of procedure, timing, and whether additional stages are required. However, under federal law, insurance providers are required to cover breast reconstruction surgery, including procedures on the opposite breast for symmetry. During your consultation, our staff will help you understand your coverage and provide detailed cost information.
