With time, the effects of gravity, breast-feeding, pregnancy, and weight loss can result in decreased skin elasticity and sagging of the breasts. Your breasts may appear deflated as a result of lost volume and/or the nipple/areola may be enlarged from prior stretching.

A breast lift (also known as a mastopexy) can reshape the breast and tighten the existing skin. In addition, a breast lift can create a fuller more natural appearing breast and raise the position of your nipple. In some cases, the insertion of an implant is combined with a breast lift to create a full, firm, youthful breast.

While there are many plastic surgeons performing breast lifts, not all techniques are the same. Most of the traditional mastopexy techniques only excise the excess skin and rely on the skin to maintain the result over time. This generally results in recurrent drooping of the breast with time since loss of skin elasticity was the source of the initial problem.

We believe that in addition to the removal of skin, the breast gland has to be reshaped and elevated to create a longer, more natural appearing outcome. In addition, they use your own body’s tissue to augment your breast shape and volume. Dr Haque has experience with the latest techniques that minimize scars and allow the breast to have more projection, last longer, and have a natural shape.

Dr Haque will guide you through the process step by step. We believe that patients, their desires, and anatomy are all unique. Therefore, we evaluate each patient and create a customized surgical plan for all of their patients.

Breast Lift / Mastopexy Procedure

A breast lift or mastopexy is performed by making incisions around the nipple-areola complex and possibly below in a vertical direction. The nipple is left attached to the breast tissue so that the blood vessels and nerves going to the nipple are preserved. The excess skin tissue is removed, and the breast is reshaped and elevated to create a natural shape and contour that is better proportioned to your body. In some instances your body’s own tissue is utilized to create a fuller upper pole of the breast. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.

An augmentation mastopexy is performed by making incisions around the nipple-areola complex and possibly below in a vertical direction. The implant is generally place under the muscle. The nipple is left attached to the breast and repositioned on the new breast mound created by the implant. Patients can choose between either a silicone or saline implant. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.

Who is a Candidate for a Breast Lift or Mastopexy?

Women who are in good health that have sagging of their breasts and desire a more youthful look are candidates for the breast lift procedure. Women that do not smoke and do not plan on having more children are ideal candidates, since pregnancy can re-stretch your skin and offset your surgical results.

How Do You Prepare for Your Breast Lift Surgery?

Smoking can result in nipple-areola loss and possibly skin loss and as a result, we require patients to stop smoking 1 month prior to undergoing a breast lift / mastopexy.

Recovering After Your Breast Lift/Mastopexy

In most patients, no drains are used and all the sutures are dissolvable. You should wear a sports bra without underwire for the first month. Dr Haque and his team will discuss various methods to try to minimize the appearance of your scars.
