Breast augmentation is one of the most popular procedures in the United States. Many patients seek consultation for cosmetic surgery to enlarge, enhance or increase breast volume of the breast. Sometimes, it is combined with other procedures so that patients can achieve their desired look.
Patients opt for breast augmentation for a number of reasons. Some people want to increase size, while others are looking to restore the look they had previously. No matter what the reason, Dr. Enam Haque will discuss the patient’s goals, the options for implants, and any surgical risks regarding breast augmentation.
Several variables to consider with breast augmentation include the type of implants, the placement of the implants, the types of incisions and their location. All of these factors are important to help attain the desired look. Dr. Haque personalizes the approach for each patient each for the best possible outcome.
There are 4 different types of incisions used in surgical breast augmentation, but not all options are suitable for every patient. Dr. Haque will discuss each option available for the particular patient.
- Periareolar – an incision around the nipple-areola complex
- Inframammary – incision at the base of the breast
- Transaxillary endoscopic augmentation mammoplasty – an incision within the armpit is utilized and with the assistance of a camera a precise pocket under the muscle is created for the implan
- TUBA (transumbilical breast augmentation) – an incision around the belly button (umbilicus)
Understanding Implant Placement
Implants may be placed above the muscle and under the mammary gland (subglandular); under the muscle and the gland (submuscular); and under the gland and fascia of the muscle (subfascial). There are a number of variables that determine which placement is used. A woman’s body type, breast size and other aspects of anatomy affect the best way to approach placement. The pros and cons of all options will be covered during an initial consultation.
Implant Size is a Personal Choice
Implants come in a wide range of sizes to adjust to a variety individuals. Dr. Haque will discuss a patient’s desired outcome and outline what will work for their body type and anatomy to achieve the best possible result. Dr. Haque tempers surgical success and patient safety when recommending an implant size for a patient’s expectations.
There are pros and cons to each of the three implant types currently available. Saline, silicone and highly cohesive silicone (“gummy bear”) implants each have a different “feel”, but they also differ in cost.
Saline implants typically use smaller incisions and are available for women of all ages. If a rupture occurs, saline is harmless and can be absorbed by the body. However, they don’t feel as natural as their silicone counterparts.
Silicone implants, on the other hand, are popular because of their “natural” feel. They can offer improved results for patients with thin skin, but silicone implants do require a larger incision. Though many advancements have been made to help insure the safety of silicone implants, a leaking or ruptured implant may be harder to detect. These implants are generally indicated for women over 22 years of age.
Highly Cohesive Silicone Implants
The most natural feeling implants are the highly cohesive silicone implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants because of their firmer feel. Gummy bear implants are more expensive, but provide a very natural look with minimal risk of gel leakage.
Just as every body has a unique shape, there are two types of implants with varying projections to ensure the best fit, appropriate projection and even cleavage created by breast augmentation.
